How to prepare for child custody mediation

Arizona residents in the process of divorcing are likely aware of how much is involved. In the absence of a prenuptial agreement, matters such as property division and alimony often must be settled in court. What's more, with children involved, it can become all the more complicated. Oftentimes, child support arrangements must be settled, along with child custody. These issues can be a source of great stress for parents.

However, some of this stress can be alleviated with preparation. Some parents will be able to work out a child custody plan with a mediator. Knowing what to expect in child custody mediation can help parents present a clear case and fight for an arrangement that best suits their needs and the needs of their children.

First, one article suggests being aware of one's concerns regarding these matters. Having a clear idea of what is wanted before child custody mediation begins can be of immense help. Writing down one's goals and outlining one's chief concerns can help in achieving this clarity.

Next, parents may want to consider talking to the other spouse before child custody mediation. Even though this may seem strange -- after all, mediation is needed because the two spouses do not see eye-to-eye -- there are some simple matters that can be achieved by having a quick talk before the process begins. There may be a few points on which the two spouses agree. By establishing this before mediation, the process can often proceed more smoothly and can seem less daunting.

With all of these matters, making sure that each step along the way is informed by legal expertise can be of great aid. By doing so, it is often possible to present one's case in a clear and compelling manner.
