Arizona guidelines for child support change with time

On Behalf of | Oct 9, 2015 | Child Support

Laws may seem to be set in stone but in many cases they are subject to changes. They can expire, be amended, or be repealed. What was law in Arizona a few years ago may be different or non-existent under the current state code.

Similarly, the enforcement of certain legal responsibilities can change as the laws that they are based on are modified throughout time. For example, in 2015, the state of Arizona modified its child support guidelines and provided a new online calculator for individuals to utilize when computing their expected monthly child support payments. When the state modifies the guidelines on which child support orders are based, parents may be unsure which version of the Arizona guidelines is applicable to their particular cases.

The new guidelines took effect on July 1, 2015 and apply to all original child support orders entered after June 30, 2015. The new guidelines also apply to modifications, after June 30, 2015, of orders entered on or before that date. If a parent’s child support obligation was created after May 30, 2011 and before July 1, 2015, they should follow the version of the Arizona guidelines that was in effect at the time the obligation was created.

Individuals who wish to make changes or modifications to their child support orders should seek the advice of counsel before effectuating changes without court approval. Parents who have further questions as to how to compute their child support obligations may retain their own legal representatives to better educate themselves on the applicable child support guidelines in Arizona.
